BEHIND THE WHEEL

Paragon Driving School (PDS) offers a driver's education program specifically designed for teenagers aiming to obtain their driver’s license. PDS collaborates with various education institutions, including private, public, and home schools, to provide comprehensive driver’s education instruction, which might not be accessible otherwise. Our program follows the Virginia State Driver's Ed curriculum, which includes 30 hours of classroom coursework and 14 periods of Behind the Wheel training (comprising 7 periods of actual driving and 7 periods of observation). These segments can be taken together or separately, depending on the student's preference.

To enroll in the Behind the Wheel training, students must successfully complete the 30-hour Driver's Ed Classroom course from a DMV-approved educational outlet. They need to present the 30-hour Driver's Ed Classroom Course Completion Certificate before starting the Behind-the-Wheel training. Our Behind the Wheel sessions are conducted in vehicles provided by PDS, which are equipped and approved by the DMV and appropriately insured for this purpose.

For the Behind-the-Wheel segment, students must hold a Learner’s Permit, in addition to completing the Classroom segment. Teens aged 15 years and 6 months or older can apply for a Learner’s Permit at the DMV. We encourage students to obtain their Learner’s Permit as soon as possible, even if they plan to take some time to complete the driver training requirements. Additionally, we recommend that students practice driving with family and friends and complete the 45-hour driving log before starting the Behind the Wheel sessions.

Upon successfully completing the Behind the Wheel training, PDS will issue a 180-Day Virginia Temporary Driver's License to eligible new drivers. To qualify for this license, drivers must fulfill four requirements outlined in the Virginia State Code: completing the 45-hour driving log (with 30 hours during the daytime and 15 hours at night), holding the Learner's Permit for 9 months, and completing both the Classroom and Behind the Wheel Driver's Ed components.

Paragon Driving School provides in-car driving instruction for teenagers who meet the following requirements:

  • They must have a valid Virginia Learner's Permit.
  • They should have finished the 30-hour Driver Education Classroom course and can provide the completion certificate from the school.
  • They need to have completed the 45-hour driving log.
  • They must be under 18 years old. (If they're 18 or older, they should refer to the Adult Behind the Wheel section below.)

DRIVING TIMES

Our Behind the Wheel program consists of 7 50-minute driving periods and 7 50-minute observation periods as specified by DMV regulations. Driving schedules are based on student & instructor availability.

ADULT BEHIND THE WHEEL

For adults aged 18 and older, they must team up with other adults for the Behind the Wheel program. The structure involves 7 driving sessions and 7 observation sessions, similar to what's offered to teenage drivers. We provide the vehicle for Behind the Wheel sessions. Upon successful completion, we issue a DMV Waiver document. This document exempts them from the DMV Road Skills Test and the requirement of holding a Learner's Permit. Taking this document to the DMV will lead to the issuance of a Driver's License.

To enroll in the Adult Behind the Wheel program, individuals must meet certain requirements. They need a Virginia Learner's Permit and must have completed 45 hours of documented driving experience. Additionally, they must furnish the completion certificate for the 30-hour Driver's Ed Classroom Course. If they took the classroom course in high school, they can obtain the certificate from the school's records, even if it was completed several years ago.
